Back To School. Who’s ready?
The holidays are (finally) over. Here are some practical steps to help everyone get organized.
Preparing children for the return to school can be a challenging time for everyone. Effective organization is key to ensuring a smooth transition and reducing stress. Encourage independence by getting children involved in organizing and packing their belongings
1. Establish a Routine Early
Start adjusting bedtime and morning routines at least a week before school begins. Gradually shift bedtimes and morning wake-up times to align with school hours. Practice using an alarm clock or rise-to-wake light system to help the child adjust to the new schedule. Consistent routines help children feel more prepared and reduce stress.
2. Plan the School Bag and Supplies
Check all school supplies and replenish and label these in advance. Make sure the child can open containers and fasteners such as zippers, bag clips, water bottles, and lunch boxes.
Teach the child to organize belongings themselves. Create checklists for what to pack: these can look like laminated checklists on the bedroom door, or luggage tags on bags to help them remember what to bring. Have the child organize their school bag several days ahead so they are familiar with where everything belongs. Encourage them to follow nightly packing routines. This builds responsibility and confidence.
3. Prepare Uniforms and Clothing
Ensure all items fit, are clean, and labeled. For some children, having a separate school wardrobe area can be extremely helpful. Coat hangers can be labeled using blank hanger dividers with days of the week written on them. Having labeled bins or containers for each day of the week can be useful for both child and caregiver.
During the holidays, allow the child time to practice the fine motor skills they will need for dressing, such as buttons or buckles. If these are a struggle, consider alternatives such as Velcro fasteners. Lay out the school uniform or clothing a day ahead to avoid frantic searches in the morning.
4. Review School Information
Go through school schedules, lunch menus, or after-school activities with the child to familiarize them with what to expect. Discuss the school day structure to reduce any anxiety about changes or new routines. Colour-coded paper or or electronic calendars and planners can help to keep everyone on track.
5. Talk About Feelings
Discuss any worries or excitement the child may have about returning to school. Social stories can be a great tool to prepare a child for the transition back to school routines. Open conversations help children process emotions and build resilience.
With careful preparation and organization, the back-to-school period can become a positive experience, setting children up for a successful academic year.
